Bootle fire: Huge wildfire rips through field near major road as firefighters rush to scene

A huge fire has ripped through a field near a major road in Merseyside with images showing the night sky lit bright by the flames.

Fire crews rushed to the scene after receiving calls at around 9.35pm on Tuesday of major wildfire on land behind Buckley Hill Lane in Netherton.

Two fire engines arrived from Buckley Hill and Kirkby and crews were seen tackling the flames with the field well alight before a third engine also came to help out.

Dramatic Images showed the sky lit up by orange flames and smoke as the dry land easily caught fire.

The ferocity of the fire has caused the closing of Edge Lane northbound, having broken out on a field behind a newly built housing estate on Runnells Lane.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service initially said: “We were called to a field just off Buckley Hill Road at 9.35pm, with two fire engines arriving around nine minutes later. We have one appliance from Kirkby and another from Buckley Hill, which was in another area at the time of the call.

“No other emergency services are in attendence and work to put out the fire is ongoing.”

A number of eyewitnesses have said they were worried about Shy Lowen Horse & Pony Sanctuary, which is at the junction of Edge Lane and Buckley Hill Lane, reported the Liverpool Echo.

Firefighters, though, appeared to have got control of the blaze after an hour and a half.

Crews can be seen in the field and dampening down the area.

North West Ambulance Service has said that they were not called to the scene and there appear to have been no injuries.
